Why do Americans LOVE to shop?

Enjoyment and self-fulfillment that would otherwise come from hobbies, socializing, the things that you described, instead come from shopping. Its immediate gratification, though probably not sustainable. Of course its not all Americans that do; some people just don't have any creativity or drive. Consumer culture I guess.
